Early iPhone Duo owners report matching cracks along the foldable display. Apple is directing affected customers to AppleCare for replacement support.

Cracked Screens Emerge on Apple’s New Foldable iPhone Duo

Cracks raise an early question about the iPhone Duo

The first reports of cracked displays have put an early question mark over Apple’s new iPhone Duo. The foldable phone has drawn mostly positive reviews for its engineering, but some owners say the inner screen developed a prominent crack within days of reaching customers. That timing makes the complaints hard to dismiss as ordinary wear, even though it doesn’t establish what caused the damage or how widespread it is.

Photos and videos shared on social media and Reddit show a similar pattern: a crack down the display’s center hinge, with a horizontal band of white pixels extending across the left side. One Australian owner said they heard a crack before seeing the damage and received a replacement at an Apple Store. Another reported that the screen failed before they’d finished setup. Those accounts describe serious failures at a particularly vulnerable point in a foldable phone: the area that bends whenever the device opens or closes.

That shared location is the detail drawing attention. When separate owners describe damage in the same place, it gives customers a reason to look for a common explanation. But similar-looking failures don’t, by themselves, prove that every device has the same underlying defect. A photo can show where a screen broke; it can’t show what happened inside the hinge or establish whether handling, a component, or some other factor contributed.

A Reddit thread is gathering accounts from affected owners. Some outlets have dubbed the reports “CrackGate,” recalling the attention around Apple’s 2011 Antennagate episode. The label is catchy, but it risks making an unresolved set of complaints sound like a confirmed product-wide failure. For buyers, the shared damage pattern is the striking detail; for now, though, reports alone can’t establish how often it happens or what causes it.

What the early reports can and can’t show

Apple told Bloomberg: “If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.” The company also said affected units typically develop the problem early in unboxing or setup. That gives owners a clear next step, but the statement doesn’t explain the cause, the number of cases Apple has examined, or whether the company has identified a pattern in the devices themselves.

Reports posted online can be useful early warnings. Owners can compare symptoms, spot repeated details, and bring an apparent issue to a company’s attention before there’s much formal information available. They’re also an incomplete record: people with a failure have more reason to post than owners whose phones are working normally, and accounts shared online don’t provide a reliable count of affected devices. A growing thread can show that concern is spreading; it can’t tell readers what proportion of all phones have failed.

That distinction matters especially for a new foldable. Its inner screen and hinge are central to how the product works, so a failure at the fold would strike at the phone’s defining feature. Yet the same design detail that makes the location concerning also makes diagnosis difficult from the outside. A visible crack may be consistent with a hinge-related problem, but confirming that explanation would require examining damaged units and comparing them with devices that haven’t failed.

The cause and scale remain uncertain

A faulty hinge component is one theory raised by readers and publications, based partly on the recurring crack location. That’s plausible, but the available accounts don’t identify a confirmed defect. Apple would need to investigate the damaged devices to determine whether the hinge, another component, or a different factor is responsible. Until then, treating a proposed explanation as established would go beyond what the reports support.

The phone had been available for less than a week when the reports surfaced, leaving too little information to judge the issue’s reach. Affected devices could come from a particular production batch, or the reports could point to a broader problem; the evidence so far doesn’t settle that question. More cases would make the pattern harder to ignore, but the most useful evidence would also include a clearer account of how Apple assesses the damaged phones and whether it finds a common cause.

Early complaints arrive alongside reports of software and app optimization issues and criticism of the phone’s high price. Those concerns aren’t evidence that the screen failures share a cause, but they do shape how buyers judge a new and costly device. For a foldable, confidence depends not only on the novelty of the design but on whether its moving parts and flexible display hold up in ordinary use. This is more significant than it looks: a crack in the central screen can quickly become a question about the product’s basic reliability.

What buyers should watch next

Even so, the iPhone Duo appears to be selling quickly, and Apple has reportedly asked suppliers to increase production. Strong demand and early complaints can coexist; sales don’t settle questions about durability, just as a handful of failures don’t establish a widespread defect. The next useful signal will be whether similar failures continue to appear as more owners use the device.

If you’re working in this space, the distinction to watch is between repeated anecdotes and evidence that identifies a cause. Useful updates would clarify whether the affected phones share a component or production detail, whether the same failure appears under similar conditions, and what Apple finds when it inspects them. Those answers aren’t in the reports so far.

For now, owners who see a display problem have Apple’s advice to contact AppleCare for a replacement. For everyone else, the practical question is whether the reports remain isolated or grow into a consistent pattern supported by more than social posts. The hinge is where attention is focused. The cause is still unknown.
